My Story
I beat cancer for the first time in 2008, when I was 33 years old and was juggling chemotherapy appointments with parenting a rambunctious one-year-old boy. My second encounter with the disease occurred many years later, just after I dropped that boy off at college for the first time. During the intervening years, I watched and offered support as my mother, my aunt, my father-in-law, and many of my friends dealt with cancer diagnoses of their own. It's hard enough to look on as a loved one receives a cancer diagnosis and faces all of the practical, emotional, and financial hardships that ensue. But many of us have the extra challenge of living far away from our loved ones, and so are unable to offer support and comfort in person.
Paper Cranes
The folded paper crane is a symbol of hope, healing, strength, and resilience during challenging times. In Japan, cranes are seen as emblems of longevity and good fortune. The traditional practice of folding 1,000 origami paper cranes, or senbazuru, represents a wish that a loved one recover from illness and live a long, healthy life.
During my first battle with cancer, I received a mystery care package in the mail from someone I had never met, a friend of a friend who lived across the country. This stranger had heard about my illness and had folded 1,000 paper cranes for me. I was so touched by this gesture that I still display the cranes in my home today, and I have included one of them in the Moongazer logo.
About Moongazer Gifts
Moongazer Gifts is a small, woman-owned business. It offers a selection of gift boxes filled with curated, comforting items selected specifically for cancer patients. I founded it in 2024, after my second diagnosis, to make it easy for you to brighten the day of the cancer patient in your life. When I went through chemo for the first time, the meds caused me to have a lot of insomnia. Instead of lying awake in bed all night, I would sit in my one-year-old's room, watching him sleep. Sometimes I would hold him while I gazed out the window at the moon. This powerful memory inspired the name of my business.
With gratitude for all of the help I've received along the way, a portion of every Moongazer sale is donated to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center to fund cancer research.
Thank you for your support!
